Abstract: In this talk we examine atypical social looking quantified via eye tracking in infants, toddlers, children, and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We discuss developmental trends, psychological findings, the potential for eye tracking to serve as a marker of autism, and implications for clinical application. We examine complementary statistical and computational strategies for parsing eye tracking data and highlight how algorithmic uncertainties parallel and highlight some of the most fundamental questions regarding our modern conceptualization of autism. With these issues in mind we then turn towards a discussion regarding the ultimate goal of our scientific inquiry and the the limitless expanse of possibility ahead.
