Abstract

This presentation explores the need for a socio-ecological approach to health psychology in addressing persistent and systemic health inequities. Moving beyond individual-focused models, the presentation emphasizes the interplay between personal behaviors, social structures, and environmental conditions in shaping health outcomes. The social-ecological framework considers cultural, economic, and political systems, offering a multi-level perspective that integrates individual, community, and societal influences. Through various research examples, the presentation illustrates how health behaviors are influenced by capability, opportunity, and motivation across diverse contexts. It also highlights key interventions aligned with the Ottawa Charter, including building healthy public policy, creating supportive environments, strengthening community action, developing personal skills, and reorienting health services. The presentation concludes by advocating for a future health psychology that is participatory, interdisciplinary, and systemically informed, capable of supporting equity and wellbeing across populations.
